How to build your customer avatar.
Marketing can be so daunting, especially when you have nowhere to start or who to market to. The virtual world is vast so you want to ensure that by targeting the right person to your services you are not aiming blindly. This post will provide building blocks on building your customer avatar.

So who is your target audience? How do you start identifying this person in this vast virtual world, by so doing you are likely to save yourself invaluable time and money. There are 5 important starter questions that are essential in defining your target customer, in this post, we will expand on each question.
- Who are they?
- What do they do?
- Where do they hang out?
- What do they want?
- What is stopping them from getting it
Who are they?
Who is your target market? What is your target audience driven by in their day to day lives? What gets them up in the morning, that something that sparks the fire within. This myriad question is really important to start creating the skeletal frame of your avatar. You as a marketer need to know their characteristics so when you begin communicating with them you are conversing with them as you would to your friend. You are speaking to them at a personal level when you have that with them you will know what they are looking for and what you can do to offer them a solution.
What do they do?
What do they want to achieve, to reach their goals, do they have what it takes to get there? You need to know their pain points, and when you do that is when you can offer them a solution because You understand their problem. You need to understand the desires of your target audience, when you understand their desires, you will also know their challenges. What you need to establish is identifying what they are seeking, how they can achieve their goal and what solutions you can give them to achieve their dream. Whatever service you are offering you, the provider need to be honest, personable and inspire your customers by offering value not just selling – give more, less selling, people are looking for something of value.
Where do they hang out?
Be the one people are looking for, instead of You looking for customers. When you know who your customer, you will know where they hang out. There is power in knowing where that audience is online, this serves a purpose as you will advertise to the right people, the audience that actually needs your service. The internet is amazing, you can research and find out the best places your target audience hang out and you can strategically place yourself where they can find you. A great tip is finding out when you were the customer once upon a time, where did you hang out, and think about how you found what you were you were looking for. You will notice that your avatar may be quite similar to you, so a great place to start, is with You!
What’s stopping them from getting what they want?
All of us dream of being or following a passion but then obstacles face us. there are a couple of hindrances that stop us from reaching for our dreams
- fear cripples us! Sometimes not knowing to take the plunge is enough to stop us in our tracks and discourage us from pursuing that what we want.
- the comfort zone – a place where most people are happy with as the situation is serving its purpose. However, most people may be in that zone but not completely satisfied.
- limiting beliefs hinder us from getting what we want, this may come from what we have embedded in our mind or abiding by what we deem as the status quo!
These are some but not exhaustive factors that might be stopping your potential customer from getting what they want. This is where you step in as a problem solver. When you offer a solution to a problem, you have given that person a foot forward to realising what they want to achieve.
